A great big thanks once again to:icondigitallica: for her excellent photography and giving me permission to work on such a wonderful piece and not forgetting :iconwingedinfinity: for being such a stunning model.

Here's the original work by the before mentioned duo

This is my first portrait on A3 (11.7" x 16.5")

This is brilliant! The hair is stunning.
Only thing I think would improve this is if the left (her left) side of the face was a little darker. Improving the contrast would make it more dynamic.
Honestly, I'm jealous of this, it's amazing. Nice work!

Thank you very much. I left the darker side of her face purposefully lighter to be honest but in retrospect I do feel I could have gone darker. Sometimes the strangest ideas seem like a good idea at the time.

Not many people knew I existed when I submitted this.

I actually re-submitted it because a friend took a picture of it with an SLR camera. Only after I'd submitted it did I realise that I actually preferred the original I took with my lil compact so I changed it back. Obviously now it just looks like a shameless promotion

Wow this is incredible. I have nothing negative to say about it... the way the light shines through her hair is spectacular, and the dimension in her lips is so life-like I could touch them. I am so, so inspired that you have the patience to finish what you started. Thank you for inspiring me :)

Thank you very much.

I am glad to have given you some inspiration. It's nice to know I am in some way repaying the sheer amount of inspiration the artists on dA have given me.

I really appreciate your wonderful comment.

This is absolutely wonderful! I love the shading into the hair and the complexity of it and how it just works with the face. The face, I also have to mention is beautiful! The subtle shading makes it look so much more dramatic. I'm also extremely jealous of how you make clothing fold and bend so seamlessly. xD
Though I do have one question. How do you start out with your hair? I've always had trouble making it look realistic.

The composition immediately stood out for me from the thumbnail .. I LOVE how you've let her hat fall over the edge a little ... overall, this is a wonderful portrait, I really like how you've shaded the hair, looks really good !

I am really glad you like it. If I think about it, the element of doing something a little quirky must be the most successful way to make your initial thumbnail image really stand out in a crowd. I may have to devise ways of doing a little "ooh that interesting" on all my future work, maybe?

Thank you for mentioning the hair. It turned out better than I could have ever expected.

It would be nice but I think trying to produce a YouTube video with my daughter screaming and shouting along with my girlfriend's terrible taste in TV programmes blaring away in the back ground; it would be more like an episode of The Simpsons than an art tutorial.

I am flattered that you like my work and feel you could gain something from seeing how I draw. I am currently in the process if writing a simple art tutorial which may be of interest to you.

I'll upload it as soon as it is done.

Thanks again for such kind words.

Thank you.

It wasn't really my intention but that doesn't matter. I think it's more important to allow your work to be appreciated by how the individual interprets it.

Thanks again.

Hair was always my nemesis. I have really worked to improve how I re-create it in my portraits.

It means a lot to know that it was that aspect that compelled you to comment. Thank you very much.

The hair gets mentioned again.

I'd always considered my technique with hair to be my weakest. It's the part I have worked hardest over time to improve. Thanks for mentioning it, it means a lot.

I honestly considered not even including the hat for a while. I am really glad I did now.

Thanks again, :D

I'll just say you definitely have strong technique and very sharp eye. Proportions are pretty much spot-on. The attention to detail is very good. The only spot might be a bit amiss -- a dimple at the end of the lips on the right (from the viewer POV). I like the framing and how the hat breaks the frame -- very nice touch! The contrast is a bit softer than the original picture, but I assume that is intentional. Very solid work overall!

Thank you for a great comment.

I didn't achieve the absolute likeness I was hoping for, I'll admit. My eye gets keener with every piece I do so hopefully one day? We'll see.

I have a relatively inexpensive point and shoot camera. There is no dimple, as such on the original but a combination of what the camera picked up and trying to make a passable image on a computer screen, (no Photo-Shop either) a dimple appeared on what was actually just some tonal variation on her skin. Strange.

Not an excuse, just an explanation. I genuinely appreciate the critique.

Thanks for noticing the contrast. I did want to make it a little softer just to give the right-hand side more of a variation and lighten it up a bit.

I think I might've confused you with the dimple thing. I meant that dimple (or teardrop-sort of shape) at the point where lips meet at the very corner on the mouth. There's one on the left (from viewer POV), but on the right they meet at the sharp angle without parting at the very end. Sorry for confusing description -- my literary skills suck. That's nitpicking, though. I think the likeness is really good anyway. And as far as taking picture of the drawing -- you're lucky you don't have to deal with color. Believe me, it's incredible PITA. That's why I stick to small scale, so I can just stuff them into scanner :)

Thanks.

I really only get a limited time to do any art, sadly. The set-up/clear-up aspect of painting is not something I can even consider, most of the time.

Thanks for taking the time to explain the dimple thing. How insecure must I be with my work to misunderstand the area you were referring to and then start to see a problem that was not even there in the first place?

I don't think it's insecurity. I don't know about you, but quite often I miss completely obvious things, even though I thought I've checked very thoroughly. Sometimes several days later I notice it and wonder 'How could I possibly miss it?'. Besides, some amount of insecurity is always to be present -- it's just the part of the deal ;)

I like it when I am working on a portrait right up until tiredness takes over and bed is the only place to be. I really am not happy with it up until that point but when I wake up in the morning and have another look I realise it look much better than I remember it.

Sometimes the opposite happens though and that sucks.

But you are right sometime I miss the most obvious things
